Keep reading for our list of 7 upcoming zombie games that we can’t wait to play.
So, it’s 2018 and it looks as though pop culture’s obsession with zombies refuses to disappear and as always we can expect another slew of new zombies games for PS4, Xbox, and PC coming our way soon. But hey, we aren’t complaining! Any game where we get to watch zombies heads explode is alright in our book! So, without further ado, we present our list of the top 10 upcoming zombie games that are coming soon.
The Last of Us Part 2
You can go ahead and skip this one unless you are looking for zombie games for PS4 as this is a PlayStation exclusive!
Everyone knows that developers Naughty Dog absolutely nailed it last time over when they released The Last of Us 1 which was an instant classic. The game combined an engaging story with brilliant character building to leave us wanting more, a lot more!
We were told about the release of the game a couple of years ago when it was revealed with a teaser trailer (which you can watch below) at PlayStation Experience 2016.
PlayStation fans everywhere were immediately excited but their hopes of a quick release were dashed as they were told that they would have to wait a while before the game was released as it was still in the first stages of development.
It’s now 2 years later and we still don’t have a release date but the general consensus is that we won’t have to wait too long for the game to be released now.
Admittedly it’s not the best source, but the composer for the game recently revealed, in an interview with Vorterix, that the game has a planned launch date of 2019. Maybe we were a little excitable when we put this game on this list but can you blame us?
Naughty Dog has revealed that The Last of Us Part 2 takes place five years after the original game finished, Ellie is now 19 and will be the main playable character. Joel also returns as an old man looking after Ellie. No one knows exactly what the storyline will be, but we do know that someone has made Ellie angry, and you don’t want to see Ellie angry.
Dead Island 2
Dead Island 2 is up next of our upcoming zombie games and is an action survival horror RPG that will be released on PS4 and Xbox One. As the name suggests, the game is a sequel to the 2011 game Dead Island and will be set months after the previous game’s storyline.
Even though the title suggests that the game will be played on an island, it will, in fact, be played out in several different areas located in California.
If you thought this game had been canceled we wouldn’t blame you. It was actually first announced 5 years ago back in 2013 and has been stuck in “development hell” a few times since then, having even switched studios before finding the right fit. If you think it’s odd that they’re still pursuing it, it’s because of its recognisable brand name. Such things are worth a lot in the world of games publishing!
According to gamingbolt.com, the game is set seven months after patient zero of Banoi and the outbreak has reached Californi. Gamingbolt go on to say that “the United States are forced to put the entirety of California on Military lockdown underneath a full quarantine. This newly established forbidden zone is now rife with zombie activity”.
Overkill’s The Walking Dead
You probably will recognise the name of this title even if you have never heard of the game. That’s because this game is also inspired by Robert Kirkman’s original graphic novels along with the successful television show and Telltale series.
Unlike the Telltale games, however, this will be a four-player co-op FPS set in Washington D.C as the outbreak begins and according to the official site, “players will band together with up to three friends on a variety of missions and raids, securing supplies and survivors to strengthen their base camp against the threat of both the dead and the living”.
“Each playable character has their own special abilities, skill trees, squad roles, play styles and background stories. Now they all share a common objective where survival and teamwork is paramount. The action is close – up and intense: take out enemies carefully with silent melee attacks or go in guns blazing. You need to be able to improvise, as nothing is certain, and a horde of walkers is always around the corner.”
It all sounds very interesting but I would try and take it with a pinch of salt. I don’t mean to be down on the game but as with all of these upcoming zombie games, it’s worth waiting for the release before giving a verdict on anything.
World War Z
Many of you may remember World War Z as a (pretty average) movie released around 6 years ago. Well, it turns out the film was originally based on a novel of the same name and now here it is on our list of upcoming zombie games which means the brand now spans 3 platforms however, the game is based on the movie and not the novel.
The game was revealed recently at The Game Awards and is being developed by Saber Interactive who are known for some successful shooters like Timeshift and Quake Champions and is coming to PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
In a recent press release, Saber Interactive said World War Z will be a four-player cooperative action game. The game will be centered on “unique survivor stories and missions around the globe, including New York, Moscow, and Jerusalem. Use traps, barriers and the environment strategically to stay alive while unleashing a storm of firepower with a variety of weapons on the unrelenting hordes of the undead.”
State of Decay 2
Next up on our list of upcoming zombie games is State of Decay 2. This is a game from Undead Labs in partnership with Microsoft Studios and is the sequel to the critically acclaimed State of Decay.
The next installment in the franchise takes you on a new, multiplayer zombie survival story. The official site stating that you will be able to “build a lasting community, working with other players or solo to overcome challenges while exploring your own unique story in a world that remembers the choices you make”.
The game was officially announced at the E3 2016 Microsoft press conference and a second trailer was released the next year at E3 2017 which gave us a look at some of the features that will be coming with the game. The game will be a Microsoft exclusive so expect to see it on the Xbox marketplace and Steam on your PC (although we hope it doesn’t make it on to this list). You can watch the video below to find out some more details on the games features.
The official Xbox site goes into some more detail on the story that surrounds the game saying it’s based in “small-town America, one year from today. The dead have risen, and civilisation has fallen. Even the military couldn’t stop the zombies, and now humanity stands on the brink of extinction. It’s up to you to gather survivors and build a community, explore your lasting legacy and redefine what it means to survive”.
It also goes into more detail on the base building aspect of the game which is a big part of the reason why the first installment in the franchise was so popular. Your base will apparently become “a manifestation of your personal long-term survival strategies as you customise it with your ideal facilities and improvements. Will you build a watch tower or plant a garden? An infirmary or a workshop? How will you choose to carve out a small slice of civilisation from the chaotic apocalypse?”.
This is one of those games that we’re going to buy here at Fully Gaming regardless of the press before the release. We know it’s bad of us but we loved the first one and think this one is going to be a beauty to play as well.
Resident Evil 2 – HD Remake Version
Resident Evil 1 has already had its own full HD remake so why not redo the second game in the series as well. It’s hard to know exactly what some of these upcoming zombie games will be like because there aren’t a lot of specific details out at the moment and this is no exception. However, it’s pretty obvious that it will be very similar to the original Resident Evil 2 with some nice graphics and playability updates.
One thing we do know is that the game isn’t a simple HD remaster with nothing but graphical changes. The team is building the game from its foundations and plan to implement some interesting improvements and changes to keep it feeling fresh.
It’s good to hear that original sequel director Hideki Kamiya has a lot of faith in the remake as well. When asked via Twitter if he thought that the new team in charge of recreating the game would do a good job, Kamiya said he was a friend of the game’s director and that he spoke to him about it fairly recently saying “I went drinking with him last year and told him ‘Do as you like, that’s the way directors should do. I trust him and his team”.
The Walking Dead: Season Four
Another Walking Dead spinoff and this time it’s one of our most anticipated upcoming zombie games. This is the fourth and final season of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead and is set to be released in the summer of 2018.
The game will take place after the events of New Frontier and Clementine will be the main playable character as expected. She will go out in search of little AJ but what happens from here is a mystery as Telltale is keeping the story secrets close to their chest before release.
Telltale confirmed that the next season of The Walking Dead will be the last. Some fans are disappointed in the decision to call the series to an end. Speaking with Eurogamer, Telltale’s Job Stauffer explained there’s a good reason behind the decision
“If we let it run longer at a certain point it would run into the ground. It’s not really common in the games industry for a developer to commit, to say ‘you know what? I feel good about this as an endpoint’ to put a cap on it and feel good about it.”
It’s almost a shame putting this game in a list of upcoming zombie games as the whole series has been about so much more than simply killing the undead but is fair more focused on the story and characters within the game. Stauffer was also able to give us some details on how Clementine’s story will come to a close in this installment.
“To be in a position as a developer to give finality to a story and, frankly, a character that means so much to us, and so much to fans, is not something you see a lot of these days. Not only in games but across entertainment. Clementine’s story began in 2012 and she’s been a part of our lives, fan’s lives – we effectively feel like we have raised this little girl. We’ve seen her come back after go away for a little while in New Frontier, and seen her mature and become strong and instill in her the ability to be able to go off on her own again. So, to write the final chapter of her story is really appealing to us. Rather than to let it run for another 40 seasons and it lose all meaning of what is special about it to us”.
You have reached the end of our top 7 upcoming zombie games. We hope you have enjoyed and have learnt something about a genre of games that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. It really is a perfect fit, whether it’s sneaking around dangerous clickers in The Last of Us or firing hundreds of rounds into a horde of zombies in World War Z, we’re sure these games will be fun to play for years to come.
